NRI Guide: Buying a Hand-Carved Mandir or Furniture from India
You're in New Jersey, London, Toronto, Sydney or Dubai — and you want a real hand-carved pooja mandir from India, not a flat-pack lookalike. Ordering across continents feels risky if you've never done it. This guide explains exactly how the process works, what it costs, and how to protect yourself — based on 200+ international deliveries we've made from our Ahmedabad workshop.
The Process, Step by Step
- Share your requirement on WhatsApp — size, design reference (photos welcome), wood preference. We respond with options and a firm quote.
- Confirm design & pay advance — typically a part-payment starts the work; you receive the order confirmation in writing.
- Crafting (4-6 weeks) — your piece is hand-carved to order. We send progress photos and videos so you watch it take shape.
- Quality check & packing — foam wrap, corner reinforcement, then a custom wooden crate built around your piece. Insured for transit.
- Shipping & customs — we hand over to DHL/FedEx/Aramex with fumigation certificate and export documents; customs paperwork is handled.
- Door-step delivery — 7-15 days by air courier for most destinations; tracking number shared with you.
Time & Cost Expectations — Honest Numbers
- Total timeline: roughly 6-8 weeks door-to-door for courier shipments (crafting + transit). Sea freight for very large 6-8 ft pieces is cheaper but adds 6-10 weeks of transit.
- Shipping cost: depends on size/weight and destination — ask for the landed quote upfront so there are no surprises.
- Import duty/VAT: your country may charge it on arrival (varies by country and declared value). Ask us how it typically works for your destination.
How to Protect Yourself (Buying from Any Manufacturer)
- Ask for live photos/videos during crafting — not just catalogue images.
- Pay in stages (advance + balance before dispatch), never 100% upfront to an unknown seller.
- Insist on insured, crated shipping with a tracking number and written documentation (invoice, fumigation certificate).
- Do a video call — a real workshop with karigars at work is the best trust signal.
Wood matters for your climate: Centrally-heated and air-conditioned homes abroad need dimensionally stable wood. Teak varieties are the safest — see our
wood comparison guide.
